The hidden rules among classes
A simple chart that suddenly made everything click.

I stumbled onto a chart last week titled “The Hidden Rules Among Classes,” and it stopped me in my tracks.
I wasn’t looking for anything profound, but the visual hit me harder than I expected.
As I looked through the columns, comparing the unwritten expectations within different economic backgrounds, I felt this unexpected blend of recognition and relief.
Recognition, because so many of the patterns mirrored things I’d seen growing up but never had the language to articulate. Relief, because suddenly those experiences made sense as part of a much bigger, mostly invisible framework.
It’s odd how much we’re shaped by rules no one actually says out loud.
What you’re “supposed” to value, what counts as being responsible, what feels normal or embarrassing — so much of it is absorbed without us ever noticing. Seeing it laid out so plainly in one graphic made me rethink moments from school, work, friendships and even my own choices.
I’m sharing this not to box anyone in or to claim the chart is perfect, but because it finally gave me perspective for things I’ve felt but couldn’t quite explain.
Maybe it’ll do the same for someone else.
Even if you don’t agree with every part, there’s something useful about the way it forces a quick moment of self-reflection.
Sometimes the most useful insights arrive quietly, hidden inside a chart you weren’t even looking for.

The chart looks like it’s drawn from the work of Dr. Ruby Payne.
Thanks for sharing this- it's so true what you say about money and the stories that form around it, getting passed down and gaining strength. The chart is amazing - I have so many little quibbles with it, but I think that's what makes it interesting and thought-provoking!
